In the fall of 2024, Students in the AP Art, AP Literature and Advanced Studio Art Classes at Falmouth High School were asked to “un-cliché” the Cape Cod Lighthouse.
They researched the 26+ lighthouses on Cape Cod and the related topics of shipwrecks, Henry David Thoreau and Mooncussers; taking notes in their sketchbooks and journals on these topics.
We then traveled to three specific lighthouses in two field trips – one down-Cape to Highland and Race Point Lights and another trip to Nobska Light. Students were able to go up into the lantern room of these three structures and tour the grounds and surroundings of each.
At each location they were asked to sketch, photograph and note their reactions to their experiences in their sketchbooks. When they returned from this trip each student spent the following weeks completing artwork and writings in response to their time exploring these lighthouses. This show represents the visual and written culmination of their shared field trip experiences.

This project was funded by the Falmouth Education Foundation.

Announcing a special offering of tower tours and storytelling commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. The story of John Slocum’s young son (Oliver or William)—a boy of about ten years old—undertaking a perilous night journey to warn the town of Falmouth is one of extraordinary courage and determination. This act, carried out in the tense and dangerous days of early April 1779, proved pivotal in saving the town from destruction during the Revolutionary War.
Advance ticket purchase is highly encouraged. Tours are limited to 6 per tour, run every 15 minutes, and estimated duration is 45 minutes. Walk-ins welcome pending availability. Credit cards only.
